Restoring “La Calera”
GRR has integrated lessons from our pilot project to improve our nursery design and increase our restoration impact.
With the support of Re:wild, Fundación Jocotoco and USFQ we embarked on a mission to restore “La Calera” reef, the most extensive historical coral ecosystem of the islands.
Our team has incorporated a range of cultivation methods to host more than 2,400 coral fragments in our nursery, representing 10 different species and 50 distinct varieties from across southern Isabela.
Restoring La Calera ReportReef revival employs a diversity of corals to enhance ecosystem resilience and complexity. We encourage propagation of endangered varieties to increase their local representation, while restoring several populations in order to promote redundancy, helping to reduce extinction risk in the process.
Our effort represents the most ambitious marine restoration endeavor in the Galapagos to date. We have restored 6,730 coral colonies recovering over 5200 m² of coral ecosystem, which represents a triplication of the area’s native coral abundance.
