Coral Baseline
Galapagos surviving coral remnants are living treasures from the island’s extinct coral cover. However their scarcity and isolation have left them ignored for decades, limiting our understanding of current coral distribution and state.
Striving to create an informed decision-making process, our first intervention was to develop a detailed coral baseline of Isabela island coral communities. By working with local fishermen, studying coastline geography and reviewing old literature our team has been able to prioritize and select suitable coral habitat for exploration.
Reef Revival has undertaken several expeditions to characterize coral cover in these areas. Our team has charted six previously undescribed coral communities, generating valuable information regarding the state of native coral health, diversity and abundance.
The information gathered has allowed our team to identify and select a greater number of coral varieties and species in the Galapagos, promoting diversity and enhancing resilience in our restoration efforts.
